General Library

The NGRS library service is available to all members. The library contains approximately 270 files and 670 books in addition to timetables, maps, catalogues, etc. All items in the library may be borrowed free of charge by members for a period of one month, from the Librarian.

Please return all items promptly as another member may be waiting to borrow them. When returning items, please include outward postage plus 10p packing charge per parcel. Please treat the Society property with great care - remember that much of it is difficult to replace.

We are always ready to receive any material of interest, whether by bequest, gift or purchase. Have you something of interest which could be useful to the Library?

If the material you require is not in the Library, we can sometimes obtain it from elsewhere.

If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, CLICK HERE to view or download the general library list (272K).

Video Library

The aims of the NGRS Film & Video Library are as follows:

1) To collect Films & Videotapes (privately made or commercially available) on subjects relevant to the Narrow Gauge Railway Society.

2) To make this material available to society Members in the form of individual loans or shows to Area Groups, subject to any conditions imposed by the Copyright owners.

An important function of the library is to provide a safe repository for non-commercial film or video footage which might otherwise be lost or destroyed, such has often occurred after the photographer has passed away. To this end the Society will be happy to accept such material, either on a permanent basis or on temporary loan to permit a video copy to be made of such material. A VHS video copy of any such cine film material will be supplied to the donor on request. The Hon.Film &Video Librarian should, however, be contacted before any material is sent.

A limited selection of commercial videotapes will be acquired, either by purchase, 'Review' copies sent by publishers, or by donation from Society members, and these videotapes will be available on loan, where permission has been given by the Copyright holders.

Society Master Copies are in S/VHS PAL, loan copies are VHS PAL, i.e normal UK domestic format.

If you wish to borrow any of the available tapes please write quoting your name and address. Tapes are loaned for one month, together with the cost of outward post & a donation, say 25p, towards packing materials. Tapes are loaned on the understanding that they are NOT shown in public & in particular that further copies are NOT made - this latter point is considered so important that anyone found to have copied any part of a tape will have their membership terminated.

An up to date list of the Video Library can be obtained by sending an Email request or a large stamped addressed envelope to the Video Librarian.

If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, CLICK HERE to view or download the video library list (84.9K).

If you have any queries, information, or possible additional material please contact the Video Librarian (please enclose a SAE if a reply is required).

 Other Video Tapes

The Society holds a small number of other tapes, mostly from Commercial publishers, and these cannot be loaned to individual members or groups until permission has been obtained from the Copyright holders. Negotiations are in hand & these will be added to the 'loan' list when such permission is obtained.

'Clips List'

Under compilation, please write for details - all donations of information gratefully received !

A REQUEST FROM THE VIDEO LIBRARIAN (March 2007)

Members may be aware that we have a videotape in the Society’s library with a short B&W film from

Yugoslav TV covering the last days of the 600mm Ohrid-Gostivar line which was operated exclusively

with ‘Feldbahn’ locos when it closed in 1966.  Although poor quality the programme is most interesting

& was thought to be the only known movie footage of the line.

However member Richard Harrison,  who recently borrowed the videotape,  has drawn our attention to

another film of the line & this time in colour !  The short 12-minute programme is called ‘Ohrid Express’

& was produced by a French company.    It was nominated for an award at the Cannes film festival in

1965 & is reported as having been shown at another festival in the USA in 2002.

Enquiries are afoot to try & trace this film & we are asking the membership whether anyone has heard

of the film or knows where it might be located  [or even owns a copy !]

Any ‘clues’ would be most gratefully received by the Video Librarian & members will be informed if the program is located.
