Special Issues of "The Narrow Gauge"

146. Harrogate Gasworks: Its Railways and Transport Systems £7.95

Harrogate Gasworks opened in 1848 and for nearly 60 years regretted the decision to build on a site at New Park, well away from the railway - the only logical means of transport for its raw matrial, coal. Eventually a 2-foot gauge railway was built from the North Eastern Railway at Bilton Junction to New Park. Trains ran for almost 50 years until the wheel turned full circle and the increasing efficiency of road haulage took over again until the gas works closed in the early 1960s. This is the story of the transport systems of Harrogate Gas Works, which achieved a fame out off all proportion to its size. There are full descriptions of the road and rail locomotives, the rolling stock, and the railway itself, all illustrated with over 40 photographs, maps and scale drawings. 56 pages. Now Reprinted.

177. Ransomes and Rapier Locomotives £6.95 (special offer)

Published July 2002, detailing the story of the locomotives produced by this Ipswich-based manufacturer. This is the first comprehensive record of this little-known aspect of an otherwise famous company. The text is supported by over 50 illustrations, including several rare or previously unpublished photographs. 70 pages.

179. Over Here! Baldwin Military Locomotives in the U.K. £5.95

Describing the various locomotives originally built for use in World War I, but destined to see service with industrial concerns and public railways within the U.K. Includes details of the locomotives acquired by the Ashover Light Railway, Glynn Valley Tramway, Snailbeach District Railways, Welsh Highland Railway, etc. 38 pages, profusely illustrated.

186. A Single to the Seashore: The Jaywick Miniature Railway £6.95

The history of the 18in gauge Jaywick Miniature Railway which operated on Jaywick Sands between 1936 and 1939, to be revived for a single year in 1949. The book also details the subsequent history of the locomotives used and in particular covers the "Tommy Mann's Enterprises" miniature railway that operated at New Brighton using the some of the stock until 1965. 52 pages, profusely illustrated.

192. NARROW GAUGE SUPERPOWER   50pp. £6. 95.

The story of the growth and life, from modest beginnings in 1928, of limestone carried for over 177-miles from Avontuur to Port Elizabeth, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape   Until recently, a heavy traffic in limestone was carried from Loerie to a cement factory in the outskirts of Port Elizabeth by triple-diesel hauled trains grossing over a thousand tones - on 24" gauge!  Profusely illustrated, with a number of drawings for the modeller, it covers both the operation of the line and the locos – including steam and diesel locos now at work in Wales. Fully illustrated with numerous scale drawings of the steam and diesel motive power used.

196. THE TRANSANDINE RAILWAY IN 1931.   32pp. £4. 95

A facsimile copy of a report published by Beyer Peacock in 1931, with additional information bringing the line's story up to date. The metre gauge Transandine Railway was part of the first rail route to link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, which connected the port of Valparaiso in Chile with Buenos Aires in Argentine.   It traversed some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth, crossing the hitherto impenetrable barrier of the Andes at a summit of 10,450 feet.   Gradients were as steep as 1 in 12, and sections used the Abt rack and pinion system. The account of the railway’s construction and operation which forms the basis for this book was published in 1931, only 21 years after the line’s opening, and when it was on the next stage of its development – electrification.   It provides a unique snapshot into the line’s engineering features, operating methods and its magnificent steam locomotives, fully described and illustrated.

197. THE PUGGY LINE  96pp.  £9. 95.

The Lochaber Narrow Gauge Railway.  A fully revised version of a long out-of-print earlier publication, with numerous illustrations, track diagrams etc.

This is the story of the line that ran from Loch Treig to Fort William, several hundred feet higher than the West Highland Railway.   The fact that a narrow gauge railway system totalling about 26 miles existed in a highly scenic area of the west of Scotland comes as a great surprise to many.    The line came about as a result of a decision in the 1920s to build a major aluminium factory at Fort William, and the need to drive a 15-mile tunnel to deliver water to that factory.  The line connected all the tunnel works, adits and shafts, carrying workers and equipment.    It continued to operate for maintenance and inspection purposes over inhospitable territory several hundred above sea level until the mid 1970s.   This is a profusely illustrated history of the line’s development, working, locomotives and stock.

285. THE MINIATURE LOCOMOTIVES OF DAVID CURWEN  118pp.  £11.00  (free to new members)

An overview of David Curwen's work and includes every one of his larger locomotives together  with over 146 photographs, many of them in colour. There is a full history of each locomotive to date and it includes locomotives built by both himself and others.
